Characteristics and mechanism of action:

The drug exerts more potent activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms compared to nitrofurantoin. It is used for the treatment of urinary tract infections. Pathogens resistant to antibiotics and sulfonamides are susceptible to furagin.

Important:

Furagin is an ineffective agent in infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Indications for use:

Acute and chronic infections of the urinary tract and prostatic gland. Prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections. Do not use in urinary sepsis and renal parenchymal infections.

Contraindications:

Renal dysfunction (oliguria, anuria), the first trimester of pregnancy, in newborns, hypersensitivity to the drug, polyneuropathy. The drug should not be given to the patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency because of the potential for hemolytic anemia.

Adverse reactions:

In rare cases nausea and vomiting may occur.

Dosage:

Adults: 4 x 2 tablets - on 1st day, then 3 x 2 tablets daily. Children: 5-7 mg/kg B.W. daily. The drug should be taken with high protein meals. The course of the treatment lasts 7-8 days. The therapy may be repeated after 10 -15 days, if necessary. Prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections: adults: 1 x 1-2 tablets (preferably in the evening); children: according to the physician’s prescription.
